Placed behind the burning area of the fireplace, the firebacks radiate heat back into the room. Except for warmth, the firbacks add additional aesthetic view to the fireplace and also to the room where this is located.
Dating back from the 15th century, the firebacks were decorated with simple designs to gradually over the centuries, becoming imprinted with royalty coats of arms, churches coats of arms or nobility coats of arms.
Being used mostly for protecting the wall behind the fireplace, the firebacks are also a heat source for opened wood fireplaces as the logs would heat the metal and this heat is redirected back into the room, increasing the fire efficiency.
